Notes: In this speech, Bob Perkowitz addressed his best ideas to bring climate change action and solutions into the American mainstream.
Expanded Quote by Bob Perkowitz:
“What we have to do is not to take climate change and switch it from being a special interest into a public interest.
All movements start out as special interests. For instance, if you talk about gay rights, it starts out about ‘them.’ And they may have right to hold their hand up, fist up, and be angry about things. But, when they start talking about family and the right to love who you want to love, and they get corporates to give same sex benefits and then people come around to accept it as ‘Hey, that’s your cousin, your friend’, they make into a society issue, not a special interest.
Too many people right now still think of climate change as the environmentalists vs. the oil companies. It is not about them, it’s about us vs. the oil companies.
We need to get around this. What do we need to do?
Well, we do not cooperate, the environmental groups. We all go our own ways trying to raise money.
We need to engage more institutions… If Wal-Mart gives same sex benefits, it’s done. If the military starts doing civil rights and allowing people of any race to participate in any part of the military, that is what enables society to do it. We need to do that.
We need a new master narrative, not about polar bears and warming temperatures. It has to be about people.
That is what we do at ecoAmerica. We work to build leadership. We work to get leaders to cooperate and to make climate change relevant.”
